📜 New Delhi — The Capital's Heartbeat
The name "New Delhi" carries a weight of history that few places in the world can match. The area around the current metro station was once at the crossroads of Mughal Old Delhi and colonial British Delhi. The Ajmeri Gate — one of the 14 gates of Shahjahanabad — still stands nearby, connecting the Old City to what became the new capital.
When the British shifted India's capital from Calcutta to Delhi in 1911, construction of New Delhi — designed by Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker — began in earnest. The Paharganj area, just a few hundred metres from the current metro station, evolved into a bustling commercial hub serving travellers and traders from across North India.
Today, New Delhi Railway Station (NDLS), opened in 1926, handles over 4.5 lakh passengers daily — and the metro station next to it mirrors that same energy, serving as the transit nucleus where rail travellers, airport-bound passengers, and metro commuters all converge. The station is, in every sense, where Delhi's past and present meet — under one roof, underground.
