thenewdelhi.in News Room — Local Journalism for Delhi Residents

The News Room at thenewdelhi.in covers Delhi city news with a focus on stories that matter to the people who live, work and commute here. Unlike national outlets that cover Delhi as a political backdrop, we cover locality-level civic issues, metro route updates, neighbourhood safety, cultural events and community stories that affect real Delhiites.

Delhi Politics & Governance

Delhi's governance structure is unique — with the elected Delhi Government, the Lieutenant Governor's office, the MCD and NDMC all playing different roles in the city. Our politics coverage focuses on decisions that directly affect residents — from MCD budget allocations for ward-level services to Delhi Government schemes for health, education and public transport. We track the 70 Delhi Assembly constituencies and how local MLAs represent their areas.

Infrastructure & Metro Updates

Delhi Metro Phase IV is the biggest infrastructure project currently underway in the capital. The new corridors — including Janakpuri West to RK Ashram, Aerocity to Tughlakabad, and Inderlok to Indraprastha — will add over 65 km of new metro lines. Our infrastructure beat covers construction timelines, new station openings, road projects and DDA housing schemes with regular updates from official sources and ground-level reporting.

Environment & Air Quality

Delhi's air quality is a year-round concern, with winters bringing severe AQI levels driven by stubble burning, vehicular emissions and industrial activity. Our environment coverage includes AQI data by locality, GRAP restriction updates, Yamuna river pollution monitoring and the status of Delhi's green initiatives. We track the Central Pollution Control Board data and present it in accessible, locality-specific formats for residents.

Frequently Asked Questions — Delhi News
Common questions about Delhi's city governance, infrastructure and civic life
Who governs Delhi — the state government or the Centre?+
Delhi has a unique governance structure. The elected Delhi Government handles subjects like education, health, water and local administration. However, the Lieutenant Governor (LG), appointed by the Centre, has significant authority — especially over services (IAS postings), land and police. The Delhi Police reports to the Union Home Ministry, not the Delhi Government. The MCD handles municipal services like sanitation, parks and local roads.
What is the current status of Delhi Metro Phase IV?+
Delhi Metro Phase IV consists of several priority corridors approved by the central government. The Janakpuri West–RK Ashram Marg corridor is the most advanced in construction. The Aerocity–Tughlakabad line and the Inderlok–Indraprastha corridor are also in active construction. Civil work is ongoing at multiple sections, with partial openings expected between 2026 and 2028. Check our infrastructure section for the latest corridor-wise updates.
What is GRAP and how does it affect Delhi residents?+
GRAP stands for Graded Response Action Plan — a set of emergency measures activated by the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) when Delhi's AQI crosses certain thresholds. Under GRAP Stage I (AQI 201–300), diesel generators are restricted. Stage II adds construction dust controls. Stage III (AQI 401+) bans BS-III petrol and BS-IV diesel vehicles. Stage IV (AQI 450+) can include school closures, WFH advisories and a ban on trucks entering Delhi. GRAP typically activates between October and February.
How does the MCD affect daily life in Delhi?+
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) — unified into a single body in 2022 — is responsible for solid waste collection, road maintenance (local roads, not highways), public parks, slaughterhouses, birth and death certificates, building plan approvals, property tax collection, and primary schools. The MCD's 250 wards each have an elected councillor. If your street light is broken, your garbage isn't collected, or your local park is neglected — that's the MCD's jurisdiction, not the Delhi Government's.
How can I check Delhi's live AQI by locality?+
The most reliable source for Delhi's real-time AQI is the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) website and app at cpcb.nic.in, which shows station-wise air quality data. The SAFAR India app (by Ministry of Earth Sciences) gives 72-hour AQI forecasts for Delhi. The IQAir website aggregates multiple monitoring stations and shows neighbourhood-level AQI. For official GRAP restriction updates, the CAQM website publishes bulletins whenever restrictions change.
