Delhi Metro Map — An Overview

The Delhi Metro Map is the visual and operational backbone of one of the world's largest urban transit systems. Managed by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) — a joint venture of the Government of India and the Government of NCT of Delhi — the metro network stretches across 374.47 kilometres with 271 stations spread across 10 colour-coded lines, serving not just Delhi but the entire National Capital Region (NCR).

When the first metro train ran on the Red Line between Shahdara and Tis Hazari on December 24, 2002, it was a quiet revolution. Today, over 64.6 lakh (6.46 million) passengers rely on it every single day, making Delhi Metro the second-busiest metro system in India and one of the top 15 largest metro networks globally by ridership.

🗺️ Did You Know? The Delhi Metro Map covers six cities — Delhi, Gurugram, Noida, Greater Noida, Ghaziabad, and Faridabad — making it a genuine NCR-wide regional transit system, not just a city metro. Phase 4 expansion, expected by 2027, will add approximately 65 km more to the network.

Understanding the DMRC metro map is essential for commuters, tourists, and daily travellers. Each line on the Delhi Metro route map is colour-coded for easy navigation — from the historic Red Line (the original 2002 corridor) to the modern Magenta Line connecting South Delhi to Noida. The map also uses interchange symbols to mark stations where you can switch from one line to another — a key skill for any Delhi commuter.

This guide covers everything you need to know: all Delhi Metro lines, complete station lists, interchange stations, fare charts, metro timings, travel tips, and the complete DMRC route map.

🛂 How to Buy a Delhi Metro Token

Tokens are available at Token Vending Machines (TVMs) at every station. Most TVMs accept coins and notes (₹10, ₹20, ₹50, ₹100, ₹200, ₹500) and give change. A token is valid for a single journey only, in one direction. You can also purchase tokens at the staffed ticket counter. For frequent travel, a Smart Card (also called a Travel Card) is highly recommended — it saves 10% on every ride and speeds up entry at gates.

📜 History of Delhi Metro — From Phase 1 to Phase 4

The story of Delhi Metro is one of India's most remarkable urban infrastructure achievements. From a vision in the 1990s to the world-class network it is today, the DMRC route map has evolved through four distinct phases of expansion.

1

Phase 1 (2002–2006) — 65.1 km | The Beginning

India's first modern metro launched on December 24, 2002 with the Red Line's Shahdara–Tis Hazari section. Phase 1 covered 65.1 km and connected key corridors including Old Delhi to Dwarka. Delhi Metro instantly became a symbol of urban modernity.

2

Phase 2 (2004–2011) — 124.9 km | The Great Expansion

Phase 2 was the largest expansion, adding 124.9 km. The Yellow Line was extended to Gurugram (HUDA City Centre). The Blue Line was built, and the Airport Express was inaugurated in 2011. The network grew from a city system to a true NCR-wide network.

3

Phase 3 (2011–2023) — 162.5 km | Smart & Automated

Phase 3 introduced driverless operations on the Magenta and Pink Lines. The network crossed 350 km. Violet Line extension to Ballabhgarh (Faridabad), Pink Line's 59.2 km ring corridor, and Green Line extension to Bahadurgarh were completed.

4

Phase 4 (2019–2027 est.) — 65.1 km | The Future

Under construction. Will add the Golden Line (Janakpuri West to RK Ashram), Aerocity–Tughlakabad extension, and several other corridors. Estimated 2027 completion. Network will reach approximately 450 km — one of the world's 10 largest.

🔀 Key Interchange Stations on the Delhi Metro Map

💡 Delhi Metro Travel Tips — Smart Commuting Guide

Whether you are a first-time visitor or a seasoned Delhi resident, these Delhi Metro travel tips will save you time, money, and frustration on the DMRC network.

🪙 Always Carry Small Change

Token Vending Machines give change but often run out. Small notes (₹10–₹100) work best. Smart Card avoids queues entirely.

⏰ Avoid Peak Hours

8–11 AM and 5–8 PM are extremely crowded. Travel before 8 AM or after 8 PM for a comfortable journey and MJQRT discount.

📱 Use DMRC App

The official DMRC Metro app shows route planning, fare calculation, and real-time train timings. Available on iOS and Android.

♀️ Women's Coach

First coach of every train is reserved for women only. Metro staff strictly enforce this. Women can also travel in other coaches.

🎒 Baggage Rules

All bags go through X-ray screening. Prohibited items include liquids above 1L, flammable materials, and sharp objects over 5cm.

🗺️ Know Your Exit Gate

Major stations have 6–10 gates leading to different areas. Check the gate number before boarding to avoid long walks at your destination.

💳 NCMC Card

National Common Mobility Card works across buses, metros, and even some parking facilities. One card for all transit in Delhi NCR.

🧑‍🦽 Accessibility

All stations have lifts, ramps, and tactile paths for wheelchair users. Priority seats are marked inside coaches. Guards assist at gates.

📷 Photography Rules

Photography inside stations and on platforms is prohibited. You may photograph the exterior freely. Violation invites a fine.
