Kashmere Gate features a unique multi-level design. The Red Line runs on an elevated structure at the highest level, while both the Yellow Line and Violet Line run underground on parallel levels below. This means smooth, step-free interchanges between all three lines via escalators and lifts.
🔴 Red Line (Line 1) — Rithala ↔ Shaheed Sthal
The first line of Delhi Metro, inaugurated in 2002. At Kashmere Gate, the Red Line runs elevated with side platforms. It connects North-West Delhi (Rohini, Rithala) to Ghaziabad (Shaheed Sthal) in the East.
- Platform 3 → Towards Rithala (West / Rohini direction)
- Platform 4 → Towards Shaheed Sthal (East / Ghaziabad direction)
🟡 Yellow Line (Line 2) — Samaypur Badli ↔ HUDA City Centre
Often called the backbone of Delhi Metro, the Yellow Line runs underground at Kashmere Gate with an island platform. It connects North Delhi to Gurugram, passing through iconic stations like Chandni Chowk Metro Station, New Delhi Metro Station, and Rajiv Chowk Metro Station.
- Platform 1 → Towards Huda City Centre / Gurugram (South direction)
- Platform 2 → Towards Samaypur Badli (North direction)
🟣 Violet Line (Line 7) — Kashmere Gate ↔ Raja Nahar Singh (Ballabhgarh)
The Heritage Line runs underground parallel to the Yellow Line. Kashmere Gate is its northern terminus. The line heads south via ITO, Jama Masjid, Lal Quila, Central Secretariat, Nehru Place, all the way to Faridabad. This extension, added in May 2017, significantly relieved congestion on the Yellow Line.
- Platform 5 → Towards Raja Nahar Singh, Ballabhgarh (South / Faridabad direction)
- Platform 6 → Terminus (trains originating from here)

📜 Historical Significance of Kashmere Gate
The name Kashmere Gate (or Kashmiri Gate) is deeply rooted in Delhi's history. The original gate was built in 1835 as one of the 14 principal gates of Shahjahanabad (Old Delhi). It faced the direction of Kashmir — hence the name.
During the Indian Rebellion of 1857, this gate became the site of one of the most celebrated acts of valour in military history. A small group of British soldiers blew open the gate's defences, enabling British forces to storm Delhi — at the cost of their own lives. Five of these soldiers were posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross. A plaque on the original gate still honours their names.
Today, this metro station named after the ancient gate carries a staggering 2.5 lakh passengers per day, blending centuries of history with the modern pulse of Delhi's transit system. It stands as a reminder that some of Delhi's most significant places exist in perfect continuity — from Mughal walls to metro tunnels.
